The Evolution of the Canadian Prairie Grain Handling System

Researchers: James Nolan, University of Saskatchewan

Research Summary

To develop an agent-based simulation model of the Prairie grain elevator network and to examine the effects of possible alternative agricultural and/or transportation policy scenarios. Recent changes in the Western grain elevator system have been driven by factors at both the industrial and the farm level. While a link exists between farm level policies and the supporting elevator network, the extent to which these policies affect the structure of the grain elevator system is not well understood.

Significance of Research

The suggested research helps build an understanding of the consequences, both foreseen and unforeseen, of farm level policy.
